Buddhism is also India, and there is no I, no innermost Self according to the Enlightened One. So this search here is very much limited to the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta only, hence is not a search for the Ultimate Truth of India. As for the separate individuals, see what has been said by the great Vedantins Ramanuja or Nimbarka, to begin with.

Buddhism comes form Hinduism, the Buddha was originally a Hindu, Buddhism is basically the Hindu teachings as understood by the Buddha. of course there is an innermost self, that's the self you awaken to and realise in meditation... and it's definitely not limited to Hinduism, in the Bible they call it the Holy Ghost...

Go checik the meaning of trilaksana, and in particular, the sublime understanding of anatma-vada, i.e., that there is no Self - either eternal (nitya) or momentary (ksanika). ;)

tha basic Hindu philosophy, on which the Buddha also agrees, is that the physical world is an illusion generated in the senses of the self. when you say there is no self, what does that mean? that there is only the physical? and if so, the how are you different than the common western mainstream scientist?
