The 100-man kumite (hyakunin kumite) is a test of physical and mental endurance in Kyokushin karate. Kumite, one of the three main sections of karate training, involves training against an opponent. The 100-man kumite consists of 100 rounds, each between one-and-a-half and two minutes in length, against 100 opponents, ideally a different opponent for each round.
The challenge was devised by Masutatsu Oyama, founder of Kyokushin and the first person to complete it. He completed the kumite 3 times over 3 consecutive days. The second was Steve Arneil. As of 2009, only 17 people are known to have completed the challenge. The 20-man and 50-man variations have also been employed; Masutatsu Oyama reportedly completed a 300-man fight.
